Ideas From Our Community |
 |
|
The square dance world is always looking for ways to get positive public exposure in our community. Our first and foremost goal with Square Dancers for Katrina is to provide humanitarian support to our brothers and sisters who have been devastated by Katrina. That being said, here are some ideas for things that people have suggested in support of this effort that may be appropriate to take back to your club and implement in your own community. People are coming up with some good community-service tasks that perhaps your club/group could use to get some positive exposure in your areas. At the end of some of the How To Help Ideas, we've put in italics how your club may take this to your community in the future.

Instead of figuring out what to give your children and relatives for Christmas, send a donation in their name.

Remember, that as well as money, blood is desperately needed. If you are able, please remember to give blood. Including individually, how about heading down to your local blood bank and maybe organize a blood donation at a dance. It will give a good excuse for eating all the goodies some square dancers seem to love bringing to dances. ;-> There might even be a way that the Red Cross keeps track of groups of people who give blood (whether individually or at communal blood drives), so your square dance group can get credit for blood donations.
This is a great idea for an activity that your club/group could do for exposure in your community and to give something back. While it is too late for this year, how about around the time of new classes - why not put out some flyers and advertise to the public that you are having a blood drive, and get people dancing, perhaps, while they are waiting to give??? Or let the dancing be entertainment while they give and recover? Hmmmmm,,,,,

How about getting a group of dancers there to spend the evening, or an afternoon dancing with the victims, in the spirit of getting their minds off all the tragedy they have gone through? If we can lighten up their day, even for just a little while, it would be worth it. Sometimes it isn't the money that can make a difference in someone's world. We do demos/fun nights all the time - sounds like a great idea to me!

Grand Square Inc., is a registered US 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation. Perhaps your company would match your donation to the Square Dancers of Katrina?

"I just heard that some of the NASCAR teams are volunteering their trucks to haul stuff to New Orleans. That may be a good connection to get donated material down there." Hmm,,, got any connections like that you can use to haul your collected donations down to Charlotte? You never know!

Many schools collect back to school supplies to distribute to kids who otherwise wouldn't have anything. Check with your local organization/school and see if they would be willing to donate any leftover supplies from this year or last year's supply drive. Maybe they would be willing to do another drive! If they are looking for a place to send supplies, ship them down to the GSI warehouse, and we'll make sure they get to the areas that need them most.
This is a summer project that your group may be able to participate in that would have direct benefits to your community. We participated through our church in a local food pantry's drive this year sorting the tons of supplies they had in - 200 backpacks+ full of school supplies. We have heard from some grateful recipients who would have had nothing otherwise.

Set up SD "party dances" for non dancers, all proceeds to Katrina victims. A chance for people/families to help, while having an uplifting community experience. Every one wins, evacuees, Square Dancing, future classes, and each participant. I can't imagine a problem in obtaining a free dance hall at this time
